NEW YORK, NY — In today’s edition of 21 Days of Clemente, as Latino Sports continues to honor The Great One, Roberto Clemente each day from December 10th-December 31st, we look back on one of our recent Instagram posts via @LatinoSportsOficial — highlighting Clemente’s rare interview from 1971, where he just came off of winning the World Series and being named the World Series MVP.

To begin the interview, moments after capturing the World Series, with championship glory, excitement and happiness coursing through his veins, The Great One immediately gave thanks and blessings to God, his parents, and all of his homeland of Puerto Rico.

Roberto Clemente was named the 1971 World Series MVP after hitting .414 (12-29) with two HR, four RBI and two walks across seven World Series games vs. the Baltimore Orioles. It is still remembered to this day as a historical and iconic moment for Puerto Ricans and Latinos across the globe, as “this interview marked the first time in sports broadcasting history where an athlete spoke in Spanish on a national stage,” stated Danny Torres of Talkin’ 21.

Such a memorable and significant moment that our Instagram post received over 34,000 likes and more than 500 comments — all to do with recognizing, honoring, and showing appreciation towards No. 21, Roberto Clemente.

We listed the best comments from our followers below, and hope you enjoy just as much as the Latino Sports team is while we celebrate 21 Days of Clemente.

“One of the greatest of any sport on the field and as a citizen of earth… we sure need more like him.”

“I get emotional whenever I hear his voice. He is by far one of the greatest Major League Baseball representatives and Baseball Player of All Time. I love this man for what he represented, his courage, love for his Puerto Rican Heritage and his love for helping others. I love you Roberto Clemente. Thank you.”

“MLB needs to retire #21.”

“Clemente was a great all-around player and human being! I remembered the plane crash, a sad day for many. MLB should do more to honor this great ball player and humanitarian.”
