SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — Sometimes, the biggest moments in baseball happen exactly where they are meant to—at home.

On Saturday, March 7, 2026, before a roaring crowd at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, Darell Hernáiz delivered a moment Puerto Rican fans will remember for years. In the 10th inning of a tense World Baseball Classic matchup against Panama, the San Juan native crushed a walk-off home run to left field, giving Puerto Rico a dramatic 4–3 victory.

It was the kind of scene that defines international baseball. Flags waved, drums pounded, and thousands of fans rose to their feet as the ball sailed into the night. The moment it cleared the fence, Hiram Bithorn Stadium erupted. Teammates stormed out of the dugout to celebrate before Hernáiz even finished circling the bases.

The victory didn’t come easily. Panama had controlled much of the game and held a 2–1 lead entering the ninth inning. Puerto Rico managed to extend the game and survive into extras, setting the stage for the decisive swing. In the 10th inning, Hernáiz connected on a fastball and drove it 374 feet to left field, instantly ending the game and sending the home crowd into celebration.

The moment carried extra meaning because Hernáiz himself is from nearby Carolina, Puerto Rico. For a local player to deliver a walk-off homer in front of his hometown crowd in the World Baseball Classic added a poetic layer to the night. Puerto Rico improved to 2–0 in Pool A with the victory.

Hernáiz’s blast also came during a historic day in the tournament. Earlier on Saturday, Ozzie Albies hit a ninth-inning walk-off homer for the Netherlands against Nicaragua, marking another dramatic finish in the global event.

But for Puerto Rican fans, the most unforgettable swing happened in San Juan. On a night when the island’s national team needed a hero, one of its own delivered.

And in baseball—as in life—there’s no place like home.
