Yankees-Phillies And The Trade Deadline

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Trade season is here with MLB’s August 3rd Trade Deadline a week from Monday. The Yankees will be eying some extra help with needs for a right-handed hitting catcher and perhaps a corner infielder, as GM Brian Cashman looks for some bullpen potential reinforcements too.

Not that the Yankees pen has been ineffective, having posted a MLB best 2.25 ERA over their last 49 games. The pen again Saturday evening was a factor in a sold out Citizens Bank Park, preserving a 3-1 win over the Phillies. Solo home runs from catcher Austin Wells in the third inning and outfielder Jasson Domínguez in the seventh accounted for two of the three runs.

For certain, the Yankees (59-45) use that home run ball to their advantage. The ballpark in south Philadelphia is perfect for this Bronx Bomber lineup that leads the American League in balls to leave the yard (150). The Phillies (56-49) were shutout for the eighth time this season Friday night and to follow it up on Saturday, they sustained their fourth straight loss since the All-Star break in their quest to overtake the first place NL East leading Braves.

Interim manager Don Mattingly opted for a bullpen game, leading to a prevailing question of Philadelphia seeking rotation help at the deadline. The Yankees lineup took advantage of seven Phillies pitchers Saturday.

With the exception of the pair of home runs, the Yankees had struggled to score (1-for-5 with runners in scoring position) and enable left-handed starter Ryan Weathers to breeze along.

But pitching wins ballgames and the Yankees contain that strength, a key part of their gameplan with a rotation of Gerrit Cole, Cam Schlittler, Max Fried, who recently returned and two-time LatinoMVP Pitcher of the Year Carlos Rodón, currently working his way back from left elbow inflammation.

For Weathers, he had his best start of the season getting the win and became the fifth left-handed pitcher in Yankees history with at least 122 strikeouts through their first 20 starts with the club. 

Also for Weathers, no home run balls surrendered, an added boost to what could potentially be the best starting staff in baseball.

Overall, though, the Yankees are expected to be busy at the deadline. Cashman reportedly has that phone on an irritated ear. Over his long and tenured time as the GM, he’s shown not to be hesitant in pressing the button when it comes to the deadline and his team making moves. 

He acquired infielder/outfielder José Caballero at the deadline last year from the Rays, becoming a regular and much talked about Yankee who, with his defensive ability, finds a way to produce runs with a hit and takes that extra base.

He was amid another controversy Saturday on his fourth-inning catch that included a drop called intentional by the umpires. 

Caballero, the subject this week of pitch clock violation talk, is versatile, and valuable for manager Aaron Boone. A possible hamstring injury to outfielder Cody Bellinger that could land him on the IL may create more playing time for Caballero. Bellinger, appearing to have his left hamstring linger at him while running out an eighth-inning double, will undergo further evaluation Sunday. 

“Just been a little tight, I really don’t think it’s anything too serious,” he said. Boone was concerned and hopeful that Bellinger, after his 23rd multi-hit game of the season, would avoid his first injury stint.

“I don’t want to speculate too much on it,” Boone said. “It looks like it could be something but we’ll have a better idea getting up in the morning and then if we need to get tests, where we go from there.”

And it would further cause Cashman to push that button due to the uncertainty of when Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton are ready for a return to the lineup. So trade deadline talk with intensity in the coming week and chips the Yankees do have when/if a deal has to be made. Perhaps infielder Amed Rosario who was acquired at the deadline last year like Caballero. Rosario has been a valuable asset though inconsistent at the plate and is only used often off the bench in a utility role.

The focus is what Cashman will pull in a matter of days? Rosario could be a part of a trade, signed until the end of 2026. Him, Caballero and Domínguez who hit his sixth home run of 2026 Saturday off reliever José Alvarado are a trio to keep an eye on.

A player(s) popularity within the fan base and unity with teammates go out the window come trade deadline time if the right package is on the table.

Regardless, a loss of Bellinger, the 2026 All-Star Game MVP, for an extended period of time would be a significant void for the lineup and in the outfield. That alone could force Cashman to seek some outfield help, pending of course on other needs as well and not trading away valuable prospects. 

One in particular includes 21-year-old shortstop George Lombard Jr., the top prospect in the Yankees farm system, waiting for his call up and MLB debut. 

“It’s tough, because our outfield has been suffering a lot this year,” said Caballero. “Cody is a big part of this team.” 

And a major part of this Yankees team is Caballero. Likewise for Domínguez, the 2025 American League LatinoMVP Rookie of the Year, with patience, is starting to resemble the highly touted prospect who is always rumored in trade talks.

For now though, the Yankees are looking for the three-game sweep Sunday evening which will be televised on NBC and Peacock. 

The trade talk will continue, surely Cashman is expected to push the right buttons with a move or two.
