BRONX, NY — The New York Yankees’ pitching staff has been elite and the main reason why the Bronx Bombers are off to a 6-1 start, which is the best record in Major League Baseball through the first seven games of 2026. Will Warren kept the ball rolling Friday in the Yankees’ home opener, pitching 5.2 innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts against the Miami Marlins.
Warren has a 2.70 ERA through two starts which is the highest among the four Yankees’ starting pitchers in 2026 as their starting staff has the lowest ERA in MLB at 0.92. The Kansas City Royals’ starting pitchers have the second-lowest ERA at 1.62.
While speaking to the media postgame about his approach, Warren made it a point to fill the zone with strikes early and often, stating, “We were getting ahead early. (Xavier) Edwards had the first pitch homer there, but, again, we were being aggressive over the zone—trusting our stuff is better than them.”

Warren settled down after the first pitch homer from Edwards and only allowed one more run over his next 5.1 innings of work.
“I mean, solo homers aren’t gonna beat us,” the 26-year-old added. “I think if we attack early, the odds are in our favor. We got good defense behind us to make some plays and so, just getting back in there and attacking.”
Warren was given a tough assignment to start the first home game of the season in front of a sold out Yankee Stadium crowd of 48,788.
“I was feeding off the fans and the energy in the stadium, that’s something for me that’s really really cool in my second year,” Warren said, later noting the most important factor is the team pulling out a win.
“Any time we get a win is awesome and to do it in front of our fans for the first game is really cool.”

The Yankees’ pitching staff as a whole has given up three runs or fewer in all seven of their games, and three of these games have resulted in shutouts. They lead MLB with a 1.16 ERA in 62.1 innings with 65 strikeouts—ranking 17th in MLB, which means they are achieving this feat with a lot of weak contact, rather than overpowering hitters.
This includes four bullpen arms that have not allowed a run so far (RHP Jake Bird, LHP Brent Headrick, and LHP Tim Hill) with Puerto Rican right-hander Fernando Cruz in the mix, who has thrown two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. LHP Ryan Yarbrough is an additional Yankee reliever to not surrender a run yet however he has only gone for an inning.
For Cruz, he also pitched for Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, where he was lights out, recording 2.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
“Our second year together is going to be an amazing year,” Cruz told Latino Sports at the WBC last month in Puerto Rico.
“It’s a special group that we have, it’s going to be tough to beat what we have in there.”
