Ramón Santander, from Panama, says: “I am a university professor of literature in Spanish and I teach 38 young people. Every Monday, we make copies of their Letters from the Beyond’ to analyze them line by line.
“The reason why we do that, is that everyone in the classroom thinks it is something great. Not only such a remarkable idea, to look in history for those who are no longer with us, but also to give them life and place them as advisors or critics.
“It takes a great deal of creativity, human feeling, respect for the dead, a desire to help the living, and a precious command of Spanish to achieve such success, and you have to know history very well.
“My students and I only want to know one detail: How, why, and when did you come up with the brilliant idea of publishing those letters?”
Dear friend Moncho: Greetings to you and your 38 pupils, with my heartfelt gratitude for so much generosity towards my work. I hope that “Letters from the Beyond” will be useful to you.
And I will tell you how, why, and when: A few years ago, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, I was enjoying my friends, and I found myself in the need to write a column directed at a certain young big leaguer.
Thinking about what I should do, it occurred to me that if another person, more important in baseball than me, pretended to sign the column, it would be better. I decided that it should be someone who was out of this world.
The idea was to do it just once. But it pleased so many readers that I write it every Monday. Professor friend, it is the most read column of the seven I write each week.

Ramón Santander, de Panamá, dice: “Soy profesor universitario de literatura en castellano y doy clases a 38 jóvenes. Todos los lunes, hacemos copias de sus Cartas Desde el Más Allá’ para analizarlas línea por línea.
“El motivo por el cual hacemos eso, es que a todos en el aula nos parece algo genial. No solo tan notable idea, de buscar en la historia a quienes ya no nos acompañan, sino también por darles vida y ubicarlos de consejeros o de críticos.
“Se necesita gran dosis de creatividad, de sentimiento humano, de respeto por los muertos, deseo de ayudar a los vivos, de precioso dominio del castellano para lograr tal éxito y hay que conocer muy bien la historia.
“Mis alumnos y yo solamente queremos saber un detalle: ¿Cómo, por qué y cuándo le nació la brillante idea de publicar esas cartas?”.
Amigo Moncho: Saludos para Ud. y para sus 38 pupilos, con mi emocionada gratitud por tanta generosidad para con mi trabajo. Deseo que las Cartas desde el Más Allá, les sirvan.
Y le cuento, cómo, por qué y cuándo: Hace unos años, en Guadalajara, Jalisco, disfrutaba de mis amigos, y me ví en la necesidad de escribir una columna dirigida cierto joven bigleaguer.
Pensando en lo que debía hacer, se me ocurrió que si otra persona, más importante en el beisbol que yo, aparentaba firmar la columna, sería mejor. Decidí que fuera alguien que estuviera fuera de este mundo.
La idea era hacerla esa sola vez. Pero agradó a tantos lectores, que la hago cada lunes. Amigo profesor, es la columna más leída de las siete que escribo cada semana.
