Eleven Big Leaguers, Not Including Ohtani, Earn Nearly $2 Billion
Coral Gables, Fla. (VIP-WIRE) – Even children in Tanzania know that Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs and batted .342 in 22 seasons. But not even Hal Steinbrenner knows that The Bambino earned a total of $856,850 for those 22 years as a player. He played from 1914 to 1935.
Now, even non-baseball fans know that Juan Soto will earn $840 million for 15 seasons with the Mets, including the bonus. But how many home runs has Juan hit?
Few know that so far he hit 201, and even fewer know that his batting average is.285.
In other words, years back were interested in their production bat in hand, or on the mound, now we care much more about what they deposit in the bank.

Today, the rating of the player depends on the value of his contract, not on his exploits on the field.

Soto dethroned Ohtani with the largest contract in MLB history
Juan Soto and the Mets agreed on Sunday night to a record contract of $765 million for 15 years plus $75 million as a signing bonus, according to a person familiar with the agreement who informed The Associated Press.
It is the 12th contract worth at least $325 million in the Major Leagues.
Soto’s deal easily surpassed Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, 10-year deal finalized last winter. Soto’s deal does not include any deferred payments and the Japanese’s does not include a signing bonus.
The Dominican slugger had rejected an offer from the Nationals in 2022 for $440 million over 15 years. He was then traded to the Padres and then the Yankees before reaching free agency at just 26 years old.
Soto is the highest-earning free agent at that age since shortstop Alex Rodriguez agreed to a then-record 10-year, $252 million contract with the Rangers in December 2000 at age 25.
Nothing is said about what these gentlemen have achieved on the field.

Mike Trout, Angels, from 2019- to ’30, for $426.5 million
The third, according to the mountain of dollars, is Mike Trout, who was the Most Valuable Player with the Anaheim club in 2019, but due to injuries, he has only appeared in 266 games of the 648 of the last four seasons.
Mookie Betts, Dodgers, 2021-32, $365 million
Mookie Betts agreed to this deal in July 2020, five months after being acquired via Boston, and has helped the Dodgers win titles in 2020 and 2024.
He is an eight-time All-Star and is hitting .283 with 116 homers, 322 RBIs, 52 stolen bases and an .899 OPS in the first four years of the 12-year deal.
Aaron Judge: Signed with the Yankees, 2023-31, for $360 million.

Manny Machado: Signed with the Padres, 2024-33, for $350 million.
Francisco Lindor: Signed with the Mets, 2022-31, for $341 million.
Fernando Tatis: Signed by the Padres, for $340 million from 2021 to 2034.
Bryce Harper: From the Phillies from 2019 to 2031, for $330 million.
Giancarlo Stanton: From the Marlins and Yankees, 2015-2027, for $325 million.
Corey Seager: Signed by the Rangers in 2022 and through 2031, for $325 million.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto: From the Dodgers, 2024-35, for $325 million.
The total to be paid by these players, not including Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million, is 1,931 million, 500 thousand dollars.
