Coral Gables, Florida (VIP WIRE) – The name Yoshinobu didn’t exist in any country until August 17, 1998, 27 years ago, when Yoshinobu Yamamoto, now the Dodgers’ star pitcher and arguably the best in Major League Baseball, was born in Bizen, Okayama, Japan.
Why Yoshinobu? Well, the baby’s parents didn’t think twice about choosing the new name. Since his mother’s name is Yoshi and his father’s is Nobu, they simply combined them.

Now, nearly three decades later, he has proven to be one of the best pitchers in the world. He was a star in Japan, during nine seasons with the Orix Buffaloes, starting August 20, 2017; and he is a star in the United States, wearing a Dodgers uniform, since March 21, 2024.
In his home country, between 2017 and 2023, he compiled a 70-29 record with a 1.82 ERA and 922 strikeouts. Of course, in Japan, in Major League Baseball, and around the world, a 1.82 ERA over seven seasons is remarkable.
Numbers with the Dodgers
In two years with the Dodgers, he went 19-10 with a 2.66 ERA and 306 strikeouts; and he was named MVP of the 2025 World Series, leading his team to three of the four wins they needed. He pitched 17.2 innings that season, with a 1.02 ERA and 15 strikeouts.
Since Masanori Murakami with the Giants in 1964, 74 Japanese pitchers have appeared in the Major Leagues. Yamamoto has been the best of them all. A Los Angeles journalist called him a whirlwind.
His contract with the Dodgers, signed before the 2024 season, runs through 2035 for $325 million. It was the richest contract ever signed by a starting pitcher.
In his first two seasons, the team won two World Series titles, and he became the first pitcher since Curt Schilling in 2001 to throw two complete postseason games. He also won the World Series MVP award last year. In the last 58 years, only three pitchers have won three games in a World Series. The others are Randy Johnson with the Diamondbacks in 2001 and Mickey Lolich of the Tigers in 1968.
And in his two seasons here, Yamamoto won 19 games against 10 losses, with a 2.66 ERA, 306 strikeouts in 263.2 innings, and 81 walks.
In five playoff appearances and two World Series appearances, he went 7-0 with a 2.25 ERA.
The Commitment in 2026
In other words, Yamamoto has proven to be the best pitcher of all those who will pitch in the Major Leagues this year.
