As that Yankees fan said, “Gerrit’s here… We’re in the World Series. We’ll get rid of those guys in Tampa soon.”
There’s a lot of optimism nowadays among the millions of fans of our team. And it’s no wonder, when they see you in your number 45 uniform, because you have been selected to six All-Star Games in your 14 years in the Majors, including 2025, when you were inactive after Tommy John surgery. You’ve been MVP, a two-time ERA leader, and a two-time World Series veteran.
Of course, it’s a huge responsibility when people think that way about a pitcher. And I have experience with that, because during my 16 seasons pitching with the Yankees, they called me The Chairman of the Board. Imagine that, The President of the Board of Directors!
You have many skills as a pitcher and are an outstanding strike thrower, which is a major advantage on the mound. You’ve issued only 500 walks in 1,954 innings pitched, compared to 2,251 strikeouts.
Furthermore, in 12 seasons with the Pirates, Astros, and, since 2020, with the Yankees, you must have gained extensive experience. Veteran status is very important in pitching.

Mucho optimismo ahora entre los millones de seguidores de nuestro equipo. Y no es para menos, cuando ya te ven uniformado con tu número 45, porque te han llevado a seis Juegos de Estrellas en 14 años que llevas en las Mayores, incluso 2025 inactivo operado con la Tommy John. Has sido Más Valioso, dos veces líder en efectividad y veterano de dos Series Mundiales.
Desde luego que es una inmensa responsabilidad cuando piensan así de un lanzador. Y de eso tengo experiencia, porque durante mis 16 temporadas lanzando con los Yankees, me llamaban The Chairman of the Board. ¡Imagínate, El Presidente del Consejo Directivo!
