Letters from the Beyond: From Gil Hodges to Freddie Freeman – Cartas desde el Más Allá: De Gil Hodges para Freddie Freeman

Coral Gables, Florida (VIP-WIRE) – My friend Freddie:

When I saw you go airborne—feet up—and crash headfirst into the Royals’ dugout, I feared you had been seriously injured. But shortly after, I breathed a sigh of relief, convinced that you’re made of rubber.

After all, that happened on a Wednesday, and by Thursday, you were back in action. As you said yourself, you only felt some soreness in your hips and back, and the doctors cleared you to play.

Of course, I believe the magnificent reaction of the Kansas City players—who caught your head—prevented worse injuries.

That scene made a strong impression on me because, back in my days with the Brooklyn Dodgers—also playing first base—I once went out to field a foul ball just as you did. I, too, fell into the dugout on the first-base side, right where the Cardinals were sitting. But I did get hurt; I had to sit out of the lineup for two weeks.

You can imagine that when I saw you take such a spectacular spill, I felt like I was falling all over again—I even felt aches all over my own body.

I also thought about the fans’ concern, given that you are one of the best hitters of this era. Simply put, the Dodgers’ lineup is a very different thing without you.

Well, over your 17 seasons and at 36 years of age, you’ve racked up a .300 batting average, 382 home runs, 1,379 RBIs, and 109 stolen bases in 141 attempts. You’ve been selected for 10 All-Star Games and have won three Silver Slugger Awards and a World Series MVP title.

I think it’s an excellent move that manager Dave Roberts announced he’s giving you a few days of rest; he wants you in the best possible shape for the postseason. Ah! You see, I’ve been in this “Here and Now”—which you call the “Hereafter”—since April 2, 1972, yet I remain a Dodgers fan, with the same enthusiasm I had when I played for them every day.

My friend Freddie: I hope to keep enjoying watching you play, just as your teammates and the fans do.

Take good care of yourself; you are invaluable—not just to the Dodgers, but to baseball as a whole.

A sincere embrace,

Gil.

Cartas desde el Más Allá

De Gil Hodges para Freddie Freeman

Coral Gables, Florida(VIP-WIRE) – Amigo Freddie:

Sincero abrazo,

Gil.
