A Friday to Remember: Jorge Comellas—a right-handed pitcher from Havana born on December 7, 1916—had won 20 consecutive games with the Salisbury team in 1937. However, on August 20—the same date as yesterday, but 89 years ago—he suffered his first loss of that Class D Eastern Shore League season. He finished with a 22-1 record, while his teammate Joe Kohlman went 25-1. That combined 47-2 record between two starting pitchers stands as a record for all of professional baseball.
Comellas reached the Major Leagues with the Cubs on April 19, 1945, but was released just 40 days later, on May 29, with a record of 0-2 and a 4.50 ERA.

**Two details about Shohei Ohtani catch my eye—in a positive way:
1) His swing—which has already produced 30 home runs this year, following 55 last season and 310 over his nine-season career—is incredibly smooth and elegant; it is neither aggressive nor flashy. Yet, when he connects with the ball, it’s gone—a home run.
2) As he trots around the bases, he greets and celebrates with the fans, avoiding the ridiculous antics of so many others who strain to make gestures toward the Almighty, as if God the Father weren’t busy with far more important matters. Of course, God has nothing to do with home runs…
**By the way, that all started when Sammy Sosa blasted one of his 609 home runs and looked up to the heavens in gratitude. He wasn’t giving the Good Lord extra work, though; he was actually acknowledging a recently deceased relative…
**Ah! Ohtani is now ready to return to the mound and complement his home runs with wins earned through unhittable pitching…

Viernes para Recordar: Jorge Comellas, un habanero, lanzador derecho, nacido el siete de diciembre de 1916, había ganado con el equipo de Salisbury, 20 juegos consecutivos en 1937, cuando el 20 de agosto, como ayer, pero hace 89 años, perdió por primera vez en esa temporada de la Eastern Shore League, Clase D. Terminó con 22-1 y su compañero de club, Joe Kohlman, con 25-1. Esa suma de 47-2 entre dos abridores, es el récord de todo el beisbol profesional.

**Me llaman la atención, positivamente, dos detalles de Shohei Ohtani:
1) Su swing, que ya lo tiene en 30 jonrones este año, 55 en la temporada anterior y 310 en sus nueve temporadas, es su swing, muy suave, elegante, nada agresivo ni aparatoso. Pero si choca la bola, esa se va para-la-calle.
2) Durante su trotar alrededor de las bases va saludando y celebrando con los fanáticos, sin la rediculez de tantos otros que se afanan en dibujar gestos ante el posible Dios, como si Papa Dios no estuviera tan ocupado en otras cosas más importantes. Desde luego, Dios no tiene nada qué ver con los jonrones…
**Por cierto, eso nació, cuando Sammy Sosa disparó uno de sus 609 cuadrangulares y miró al Cielo en señal de gratitud. Pero él no le estaba dando trabajo extra a Papa Dios, sino que saludaba a un pariente muerto recientemente…
**¡Ah! ya Ohtani está listo para regresar a la lomita y ayudar a sus jonrones con juegos ganados a base de lanzamientos imbateables…
