NEW YORK, NY — The championship banners hanging from the rafters of “The World’s Most Famous Arena” Madison Square Garden finally added some new company Tuesday night.
Then the Philadelphia 76ers reminded the New York Knicks and their fans that last season’s success guarantees nothing going forward.
Bringing generations of fans together to The Mecca of Basketball, the Knicks celebrated their first NBA championship since 1973 ahead of Tuesday’s 106-100 season opening loss to Philadelphia.

Walt “Clyde” Frazier, a champion with New York in 1970 and 1973, presented 2025-2026 NBA Finals MVP and Knicks captain Jalen Brunson with his ring—along with each player and coach—receiving their championship hardware together on the floor of MSG before the “2025-26 World Champions” banner rose into the rafters.
Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, Earl Monroe and Willis Reed’s wife Gale Reed were also on hand for the emotional ceremony.
Designed by Jason of Beverly Hills, the championship rings feature a removable top revealing a miniature Madison Square Garden with 16 emerald-cut diamonds representing the team’s playoff victories.
“They deserve it,” Brunson said before the game in regard to the fans. “This is something that’s been brewing for a long time.”
LOUD cheers for the Captain!

Knicks head coach Mike Brown encouraged his players to embrace the celebration with their families and the organization.
Afterward Dominican-American Karl-Anthony Towns acknowledged the conflicting emotions, stating:
“It was really special to have that moment again here in New York after 53 years, we wanted to give them a better version of ourselves tonight than we did.”

Philadelphia Interrupts The Party
Leading 58-54 at halftime, New York surrendered control during a sloppy third quarter with the 76ers closing the period on an 11-0 run that was capped off by a Jaylen Brown made three with 1.5 seconds remaining to take an 83-76 lead.
The Knicks, shooting 37.2% and missing eight of 27 free throws, allowed their mistakes to provide Philadelphia lanes to attack before New York’s defense could regroup and get organized.
The Sixers’ offseason additions showed little difficulty sharing responsibilities with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey as LeBron James finished with 14 points and a game-high seven assists.
Brown, acquired by Philly this offseason in a trade with the Celtics, added 19 points of his own, while Maxey led all scorers with 28.
1.5 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter.

Before tip-off, the Brown on the opposing end, now in his second year at the helm of the Knicks, warned that Philadelphia had added players capable of creating their own offense. Afterward he faulted his team’s pace and position, stating:
“Our transition defense was not good with our starting group in the third quarter. All throughout the game, we looked like we were running in mud; whether it was in the front court or it was in transition, we were not good getting to our spots and putting pressure on Philadelphia the right way.
KAT’s Fouls Stretch The Rotation
Towns picked up two fouls within the opening 3:15 minutes and had three by halftime, leaving Brown to lean heavily on newcomer Andre Drummond.

Despite playing only 23 minutes, KAT finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds—the most boards among either team’s starters—but his four turnovers compounded the disruption caused by his early fouls.
Drummond supplied immediate energy against his former team, collecting 10 points and 12 rebounds before halftime.
He finished with 12 points and a game high 14 boards.
His finishing was less effective as Drummond shot 5-13 with Embiid blocking three shots. With that and more, Philadelphia challenged New York inside and was able to score at will. And now with no Mitchell Robinson, signing with Boston over the offseason, it’s imperative that Towns learns how to avoid getting baited on silly fouls which ultimately will hurt his team down low.
"I thought he played with a lot of bounce and energy in the first half on both ends of the floor. We probably ran him too long, because it looked like in that second half, not just him but especially our five starters, he looked like he ran out of a little bit of gas."

Brunson Struggles as Brown Demands Better
Brunson led the Knicks with 21 points but shot 6-19 against Philadelphia’s defense. After scoring 15 in the first half, he could not provide the late rescue New York needed and was looking for.
“I think it’s good for us to kind of get knocked down off the mountain, humble ourselves, put our egos in check,” Brunson said postgame.
Brown emphasized that better habits throughout the game would have reduced the need for difficult closing shots:
“If we would’ve played the right way, it wouldn’t come down to (Brunson’s three). We put ourselves in the hole not doing the other little things, and sometimes it works at the end of the games, and sometimes it doesn’t.”
Looking ahead to the Knicks’ next time out which comes this Friday, New York, visiting Boston who also dropped its opener against Detroit, will take its championship memories on the road with an immediate assignment—play the right way for 48 minutes.
