SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — Just a few days into the 2026 World Baseball Classic, the tournament is already delivering exactly what fans around the world hoped for—drama, culture and unforgettable moments on baseball’s biggest international stage.

One of the most electric scenes so far came Saturday night in San Juan, where Puerto Rico delivered a moment that shook the island. Infielder Darell Hernáiz launched a walk-off home run in extra innings to lift Puerto Rico to a 4–3 win over Panama, igniting a packed Hiram Bithorn Stadium crowd of 18,925 and giving the tournament one of its earliest signature highlights.

“It’s something that’s unforgettable truly because I don’t know how to say it, but I blacked out, I don’t remember anything,” Hernaíz said of his magical walk-off HR. “I just remember that I hit the ball into the field, and Eddie (Rosario) was in front of me yelling and jumping.

After that, I completely blacked out because I don’t hit it out that much, but I didn’t expect that.”

While pushing Puerto Rico to a strong and emotion-filled start in Pool A play, the blast marked just the second walk-off home run in WBC history, as the first came earlier in the day in Miami, with Netherlands’ Ozzie Albies walking-off Nicaragua.

Across the globe in Tokyo, defending WBC champion Japan have looked every bit like a powerhouse again. Samurai Japan secured the top spot in Pool C with a 4–3 win over Australia, continuing an unbeaten start. Despite collecting only five hits, Japan’s disciplined offense drew 12 walks while stars like Masataka Yoshida delivered a key two-run homer in the seventh inning.

And of course, no WBC highlight reel is complete without Shohei Ohtani. The global superstar crushed a grand slam earlier in the tournament, helping Japan dominate Chinese Taipei and reminding everyone why the defending champions remain one of the favorites to win it all.

But one of the tournament’s most intriguing storylines belongs to a new generation of baseball royalty.

Lucas Ramírez, the 20-year-old son of MLB legend Manny Ramírez, has been turning heads while representing Brazil in Houston. The Angels prospect blasted two home runs against Team USA, a breakout performance that immediately grabbed attention across the baseball world. After the game, Ramirez described the moment simply: “This is the best day ever of my life.”

The young outfielder, gunning a runner down from right field in Brazil’s next game vs. Italy on Saturday, has also spoken about the expectations that come with his last name, saying, “Having Manny Ramírez as my father… everybody expects so much. I’ve got to be Lucas Ramírez and I’ve got my own path.”

From walk-off magic in Puerto Rico and the same in Miami for the Netherlands to Japan’s relentless machine and the rise of baseball’s next generation, the 2026 World Baseball Classic is already in full swing.

And if the first few days are any indication, the best stories of this global tournament are just getting started.
