SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — The return of the World Baseball Classic to San Juan has once again proven that when international baseball arrives in the Caribbean, it becomes more than a tournament—it becomes a cultural celebration.

At Hiram Bithorn Stadium, the energy throughout the opening round of the 2026 World Baseball Classic has been electric. Packed crowds, waving Puerto Rican flags, and deafening chants have turned the historic ballpark into one of the most vibrant environments of the tournament.

And the home team has delivered.

Puerto Rico opened its tournament with a 5–0 victory over Colombia last Friday night, backed by strong pitching and an explosive fifth inning that ignited the crowd.

The momentum continued throughout pool play, including a dramatic 4–3 win over Panama on Saturday and a statement 4–1 victory over Cuba on Monday—a game that helped Puerto Rico clinch the top spot in Pool A and advance to the quarterfinals undefeated at 3–0.

Beyond the results on the field, the atmosphere in San Juan has been one of the defining stories of the tournament. In the opener alone, nearly 19,000 fans packed the stadium, with traffic stretching outside the venue and crowds roaring hours before first pitch.

The scenes in Puerto Rico highlight something Major League Baseball has already begun to recognize globally: international games create unforgettable moments and expand the sport’s reach.

“It’s incredible what they do out here. And how they feel about the game. They pay attention to the little details and it’s eye opening.” -Puerto Rico’s Nolan Arenado

MLB has successfully hosted regular season games in places like Mexico City, Tokyo, and Seoul. But the success of the World Baseball Classic in San Juan suggests the league should seriously consider a new initiative: a Caribbean MLB Series.

Imagine a rotating regular-season showcase between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, two of the most passionate baseball cultures in the world. Games could be hosted in San Juan at Hiram Bithorn Stadium and in Santo Domingo at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal, the legendary home of Dominican baseball.

The Caribbean has long been one of baseball’s most important talent pipelines. Yet despite producing countless MLB stars, the region rarely hosts the league’s biggest stage.

The roaring crowds in San Juan are proof that the demand exists.

If MLB truly wants to grow the global game, the next step may already be clear—bringing the big league stage directly to the heart of Caribbean baseball.
