Marlins take series in LA as Dodgers struggle at the plate

LOS ANGELES, CA — Wednesday’s drive to the ballpark must have been a rough one for players of the Marlins and Dodgers, preparing for a very early-day game after a late-night game. Who needs sleep when there is a ball game to be at?

Especially when you have two top of the line pitchers in the game on the mound in Sandy Alcántara and Tyler Glasnow.

The Azua, Dominican Republic native stood 3-2 on the year with an ERA of 3.05 before Wednesday’s outing while Glasnow had a 2.45 ERA and 3-0 record.

Miami struck first in the top of the second inning when Liam Hicks led off with a first-pitch 398-foot home run into the right field seats, his seventh HR of the year. The Dodgers came back to tie it in the bottom of the inning when Max Muncy, who led off with a double, looked to be stranded at second, but Alex Call hit what looked to be an inning-ending pop-up to Otto Lopez, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, that he lost in the sun.

This blunder from Lopez allowed Muncy to score and tie the game at 1-1.

With both starters pitching like the All-Stars they have shown to be in previous season, the score remained tied after four which was when Esteury Ruiz, from Azua, Dominican Republic, hit a 381-foot home run into the left field pavilion.

Both Miami hits to this point off of Glasnow (92 total pitches, 56 strikes) were home runs as he would leave with a line of 5.2 innings pitched, two runs, three hits, six walks and nine strikeouts.

Los Angeles evened it back up at two in the home half of the sixth. Thanks to Kyle Tucker leading off with a blistering double to the gap in right-center field to get the inning started, Dalton Rushing later drove him in on a game-tying RBI single.

Alcántara (104 pitches, 73 strikes), finishing his day after the sixth with four strikeouts, allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks.

Miami would break the tie in the eighth inning on a two-out bloop hit to right field by Javier Sanoja, of Maracay, Venezuela, that scored Xavier Edwards for the go-ahead run.

The game would end with the bases loaded and one out when Freddie Freeman hit into an unassisted double play at first base. Shohei Ohtani was tagged out trying to go back to first on a grounder to the second baseman Edwards, who then stepped on first to get Freeman for the game-ending out.

Final Score: Marlins 3 – Dodgers 2

“I don’t think we’re collectively swinging the bats the way we were early,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said as LA dropped to 20-11 on the year.

“The last 10 days, it just hasn’t been synced up. We just haven’t got those hits when we needed (them).”
