Bobby Witt Jr. and Cristopher Sánchez named Players of the Week

NEW YORK, NY — Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals has been selected the American League Player of the Week, and starting pitcher Cristopher Sánchez of the Philadelphia Phillies has been named the National League Player of the Week.

The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Witt won his third career award after previously winning a pair of awards in 2024, earning honors on May 28th and July 22nd.

Along with his father, pitcher Bobby Sr., who won on July 3, 1994, the Witts were already one of 14 father-son combos ever to each win at least one Player of the Week Award.

Sánchez earned his first career award, marking the first honor for a Phillies player since Kyle Schwarber won on September 2nd of last season.

  • The 25-year-old hit .407 (11-for-27) with three homers, four RBI, two doubles, two walks, seven runs scored, two stolen bases, an .815 slugging percentage and a .448 on-base percentage across seven games.
  • The Colleyville, Texas native tied for the Major League lead in runs scored; tied for second in hits, total bases (22) and extra-base hits (5); ranked third in slugging; ranked fourth in OPS (1.263); tied for fourth in homers; and ranked sixth in batting average.
  • The two-time All-Star racked up four hits and drew a walk on Thursday against Cleveland, marking the first game in his career in which he reached base safely five times. It marked his 11th career four-hit game, tying Willie Wilson for third-most in franchise history before turning 26, trailing only Hall of Famer George Brett (23 G) and Billy Butler (12 G).

  • The 2024 Rod Carew AL Batting Title award winner hit an inside-the-park home run on Saturday night against Detroit, marking the second inside-the-park homer of his career (also: 8/14/2023). Per Sarah Langs, Witt circled the bases in 14.13 seconds, recording the fourth-fastest home-to-home time among the 127 inside-the-park home runs in the Statcast Era (since 2015).
  • The two-time Silver Slugger and Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner recorded three multi-hit games last week and now has 13 multi-hit games this season. Overall, his 49 hits are tied for third-most in the Majors this season, while his 771 hits since debuting in 2022 are second-most among all Major Leaguers to only Luis Arraez (802 H).

  • Across two starts, the 29-year-old went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/15.0 IP), permitting nine hits with a walk, 17 strikeouts, a 0.67 WHIP, a .170 opponents’ batting average and 9.00 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.
  • The La Romana, Dominican Republic native tied for the Major League lead in wins and ERA; ranked second in innings pitched; tied for second in strikeouts; and ranked eighth in WHIP.
  • The 2024 NL All-Star and 2024 NL LatinoMVP Starting Pitcher of the Year fired 8.0 scoreless innings on Tuesday against the Athletics, permitting just three hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts. He followed up with 7.0 scoreless frames on Sunday against Colorado, allowing six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Sanchez has not allowed a run in 20.2 innings, marking the longest scoreless innings streak of his career within a single season, and the second-longest of his career overall behind a 22.2 innings streak that spanned 2025-26.

  • The runner-up for the 2025 NL Cy Young Award is the first Phillies pitcher to turn in consecutive scoreless starts of at least 7.0 innings since he also accomplished the feat in June 2024. Sánchez is the first Phillies starter to accomplish the feat with at least seven strikeouts in each start since Ranger Suarez on September 25-October 1, 2021.
  • The southpaw has dealt at least 5.0 innings in 31 consecutive outings, marking the second-longest active streak in the Majors, trailing his rotationmate, Zack Wheeler, who has thrown at least 5.0 innings in 44 straight starts. Sánchez has allowed two runs-or-fewer in each of his last 20 starts at Citizens Bank Park since April 17th of last season. Since earned runs became official in the National League (1912), his streak is tied for third-longest among all pitchers (AL or NL), matching Orel Hershiser (LAD, 1985-86); José Fernández (MIA, 2013-14); and Shohei Ohtani (LAA, 2018-22). His streak trails only Jacob deGrom (24 GS for NYM, 2019-22) and Andrew Cashner (21 GS for SD, 2013-15).

Other noteworthy AL performances last week included starting pitcher Davis Martin (0.69 ERA, 2 GS, 13.0 IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 19 SO) of the Chicago White Sox; Witt’s Kansas City teammate, starting pitcher Michael Wacha (1.29 ERA, 2 GS, 14.0 IP, 6 H, 3 BB, 9 SO); outfielder Riley Greene (.476, 5 2B, 4 BB, 2 R, .714 SLG, .560 OBP) of the Detroit Tigers; first baseman Josh Naylor (.458, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 2B, 2 BB, 4 R, 3 SB, .667 SLG, .500 OBP) and outfielder Luke Raley (.300, 3 HR, 10 RBI, 1 BB, 3 R, 1.200 SLG) of the Seattle Mariners; starting pitcher Dylan Cease (0.00 ERA, 1 GS, 7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 BB, 10 SO) of the Toronto Blue Jays; outfielder Byron Buxton (.286, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 2 2B, 1 BB, 5 R, 1 SB, .679 SLG) of the Minnesota Twins; outfielders Cody Bellinger (.375, 8 RBI, 2 2B, 2 3B, 6 BB, 4 R, 1 SB, .625 SLG) and Aaron Judge (.280, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 1 2B, 6 BB, 5 R, .680 SLG) of the New York Yankees; and starting pitcher Nick Martinez (1.69 ERA, 2 GS, 10.2 IP, 12 H, 1 BB, 7 SO) of the Tampa Bay Rays.
