SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC — If the sights and sounds out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic this week at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal doesn’t speak volumes in just how significant and meaningful baseball is to all of the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, there’s not much else to tell you.
With Team Dominican Republic hosting the Detroit Tigers in two exhibition games ahead of the 2026 World Baseball Classic, the roars from the crowd created an electrifying atmosphere matching or perhaps surpassing the level of a FIFA World Cup game.
And again, this was for two games that have no impact on the upcoming 2026 WBC.
Just a pair of tune-ups for Team Dominican Republic’s road ahead while marking the first time in history that the Dominican National Team hosted a Major League Club for exhibition games within the country.
The only time baseball fans in the United States could potentially envision themselves in somewhat of an atmosphere close to the scenes this week in the Dominican Republic is during MLB’s postseason and even with that, it’s still not the same…
For the Tigers as Detroit continues to prepare for Opening Day and the regular season, their trip this week to the Dominican Republic was a memorable experience as well, one of which helped pay tribute to the victims of the April 8, 2025, tragedy at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo.
Major League Baseball, UEPA and the Detroit Tigers Foundation honored the victims of the devastating tragedy by donating $125,000 to the Cruz Roja Dominicana (Dominican Red Cross) during a special ceremony prior to the first exhibition game this past Tuesday night.
