Baseball in India
In India, a nation with a culture dating back to 3330 BC, people began playing soccer and cricket as soon as these ancient sports were introduced.
Cricket, the grandfather of baseball, was inspired by the religious rites that Egyptian pharaohs performed in the spring to honor the god Osiris, seeking fertility for both the land and their wives. It has been played in England since 1550. Regarding the origins of soccer, however, no one has definitive information; it is known, however, that the current rules of the game were officially introduced in 1863, also on English soil.
Consequently, the people of India began practicing these sports from their very inception. And they have become quite skilled in both disciplines. However, since 2021, the MLB Cup, a tournament for children under 11, has been held annually in India. That inaugural year, 12 teams participated.
How much progress have they made with their Cup each year?
Last year, 150 teams took part, and for this year, 2026, they anticipate 180 participants. Furthermore, they have added clubs for boys up to 13 years of age in three major cities: New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
The children in India appear to be better uniformed than today’s Major Leaguers. There is even a club named the “Yankees,” which has faithfully replicated the pinstriped uniform and the iconic logo of the Bronx Bombers. Where is India headed with its youth baseball program?
MLB plans to send instructors and equipment, hoping a few adults will catch the bug.
Meanwhile, in India, people take pride in 26-year-old right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker. He currently pitches for the Rangers and was born in Watkinsville, Georgia, but is the son of an Indian mother and an African-American father.
And in the minor leagues, four natives of India, Rinku Singh, Arjun Nimmala, Dinesh Patel, and Kumar Nambiar, are preparing for the Major Leagues.
