LOS ANGELES, CA — It’s always fun to watch the Cubs come to LA. They have played the Dodgers 167 times since 1993, and the Dodgers have won 101 of them. The Cubs are 1052-1071 against the Dodgers all-time. After 2123 games, lifetime, only 19 games separate them overall.

The Cubs are four games back of the Braves and Mets for the third spot in the NL Wild Card slot. Teams that get hot in the season’s last three weeks have recked the dreams of many 100-win clubs over the years. If the Cubs keep playing the way they have in the previous ten games, they have a legitimate shot at passing the Mets and Braves.

The Braves have four games with the Dodgers this weekend, then the Mets at home for three, and finally, they finish their regular season at Kansas City. The Mets have an equally difficult stretch, starting with seven games against the Phillies, three with Atlanta, and three in Milwaukee — a team in which the Mets opened the 2024 regular season against.

On the other hand, the Cubs will finish the season with three games in Colorado, three at home against Oakland, four with Washington, and three at Philadelphia before they end the regular season at home for three with Cincinnati. Arizona stayed close enough to make the postseason last year and got hot in the playoffs, where they found themselves in the World Series, surprising everyone. Could the Cubs be the next surprise?

One person who was surprised tonight was Cubs starter Jordan Wicks. After giving up a lead-off 405-foot line drive home run to Shohei Ohtani and retiring Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman, he gave up a single to Teoscar Hernández, Cotui, Dominican Republic, followed by back-to-back-to-back home runs by Tommy Edman, Will Smith and Max Muncy (on Max Muncy Bobblehead Night).

Ohtani’s home run was number 47 on the year. He also picked up stolen base number 48, which put him on the cusp of a home run/stolen base 50/50 season. But surprise, surprise, The Cubs came back to tie the game at 7-7 after trailing 7-2. The come-back included a three-run home run by former Dodger Cody Bellinger.

The Dodgers went ahead on a first-pitch RBI single by Gavin Lux in the seventh inning and got some breathing room with Edman’s second two-run home run in the eighth inning.

LA’s “achilles heel” continues to be their pitching. They are squeaking by with two reliable starters in Jack Flaherty and the returning Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but their bullpen has been shaky at best. That is not a good sign as they approach the postseason.
