Leo De Vries on his Road to the Show: ‘Just be consistent and get there’

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Leo De Vries was the man of the hour during Sunday’s MLB’s 2026 All-Star Futures Game at Citizens Bank Park, as nearly every member of the media attempted to conduct a one-on-one interview with the Athletics’ top prospect, currently ranked No. 2 in all of Major League Baseball.

And there’s more to it. On most occasions, especially when a player is continuing to get tugged in different directions by the media, even during an All-Star event, they tend to maneuver themselves out of it or cut it short.

But not for the 19-year-old shortstop out of Azua, Dominican Republic, providing time to whoever asked during Sunday’s pre and postgame.

When the opportunity finally presented itself for Latino Sports to get a word in with De Vries, we did just that by introducing ourselves and congratulating him for his consistent success in the A’s farm system.

“Being consistent and just getting there, that’s all I want to do,” said De Vries through an interpreter of his mindset in mapping out his ongoing road to the Show.

“Just be consistent and get there.”

The centerpiece of a blockbuster last summer that included flamethrowing closer Mason Miller going to San Diego, and him headed to the Athletics, De Vries, now creeping up on one year with the A’s, spent the beginning of his pro-journey picking up learning lessons from Padres stars Manny Machado, Xander Bogaerts, and Fernando Tatis Jr., his favorite player.

Not a bad trio to have in your corner.

“I learned as much as I could from all three,” he noted. “The most important thing was to take all the information from them and gather it in. They are all great players and three great people.”

Machado, Bogaerts and Tatis had each publicly stated in the past how impressed they were with De Vries’ game and they haven’t been the only ones to make such claims. Many superstars in today’s game have taken notice of what he can do at the plate and with his glove.

“I feel very proud, and I’m happy about that,” De Vries said when informed of his skillset catching the eyes of current All-Stars and marquee names across the sport.

“Ever since I was a little kid I’ve been working for this and now they know. They know that my work is showing, that work that I put in ever since I was a little kid.”

That little kid’s time is coming, there’s no question about that.

It’s only a matter of when.
