EAST RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY — The first two weeks can’t define an NFL season, but they can reveal which players are ready for considerably larger roles. Several names have already moved beyond preseason intrigue and begun influencing games directly.
Some are established players reaching another level, while others are rookies making immediate contributions. From Seattle’s increasingly dominant passing attack to emerging playmakers in Tennessee and Denver, these four players have provided some of the clearest breakout performances during the opening weeks of 2026.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba Claims Superstar Status in Seattle
Jaxon Smith-Njigba, fresh off winning Super Bowl LX with the Seahawks, entered 2026 as Seattle’s star wide receiver and one of the best to do it in the NFL.

His opening two games have pushed that trajectory even higher, producing an NFL-leading 277 receiving yards. That output on the gridiron has also made him increasingly important when fans assess weekly matchups and NFL player props.
His Week 2 performance with 155 yards against Arizona on September 20th demonstrated how quickly he can take control of a game—catching nine passes and scoring a career-high three touchdowns, including an 82-yard score.
JSN’s combination of volume and explosive plays gives Seattle multiple ways to feature him.

Those performances should keep targets flowing his way. More importantly, Smith-Njigba’s emergence provides Seattle’s passing attack with a centerpiece capable of changing games almost regardless of quarterback circumstances.
Tyler Shough Rewrites Expectations Under Center
While Smith-Njigba has elevated an established role, Saints quarterback Tyler Shough is reshaping expectations entirely. The second-year QB has taken control of New Orleans’ offense and immediately generated significant production.

NFL insights show that Shough is currently among esteemed company, leading the sport with 662 passing yards through two games. He has completed 68.9% of his attempts while throwing four touchdowns, providing the Saints with consistent production through the air.
His 11 completions of at least 20 yards are particularly encouraging. Shough isn’t simply accumulating yardage underneath; New Orleans has successfully created opportunities farther downfield.

Maintaining that efficiency over a full season presents the next challenge. Still, Shough’s opening performances and connection with Cuban-American WR Chris Olave suggest that the Saints may be developing a more expansive offensive identity around their young quarterback.
Christian González Raises the Standard in New England
Star cornerback Christian González of Colombian heritage entered 2026 with an established reputation—signing a historic contract extension with the Patriots last month ahead of the 2026 NFL regular season—but his opening performances have reinforced his importance to New England’s secondary.
The 24-year-old has recorded four passes defended through two games, producing two against Seattle in a Week 1-Super Bowl LX rematch before adding another two during the Patriots’ victory over Pittsburgh in Week 2.

Those numbers illustrate his ability to consistently disrupt opportunities without relying on interceptions. His coverage presence gives New England greater flexibility elsewhere across the defense.
Jonah Coleman Becomes Denver’s Closing Weapon
Instead of waiting for his time to come, Denver rookie running back Jonah Coleman forced his way into a larger backfield conversation while operating alongside veterans such as J.K. Dobbins.
That development also makes Coleman increasingly relevant in fantasy football. His Week 2 performance against Jacksonville demonstrated that his contribution can extend beyond occasional rotational carries as Coleman scored his first career touchdown on a go-ahead three-yard TD during Denver’s 20-13 comeback victory.

He later secured a crucial first down and stayed in bounds, allowing the Broncos to drain the remaining clock.
Early Performances Create Bigger Expectations
Breakout performances become especially interesting when they begin changing roles. Smith-Njigba is commanding Seattle’s passing game, Shough is expanding New Orleans’ possibilities, González is influencing New England’s defense, and Coleman is earning meaningful Denver touches.

The challenge now is sustaining those starts as opponents accumulate film and adjust accordingly. September provides only the first glimpse of a long season, but these four players have already created compelling storylines.
October should reveal which early breakthroughs develop into lasting trends across the NFL.
