Description

Josh Gibson was one of the most productive home run hitters of his time playing in the Negro Leagues. He was known as a spectacular power hitter. Many regarded him as “the black BabeRuth.” Gibson is considered to be the greatest player who never played in the major leagues, because of the discrimination and Jim Crow laws  against hiring black ballplayers. Gibson also played in Cuba and in the Dominican Republic for Trujillos Dominican League, in Mexico for the Rojos del Águilla de Veracruz. He was also the first manager of the Cangrejeros de Santurce, one of the most historic baseball franchises of the Puerto Rican Baseball League

There is a story that Gibson hit one of the longest home runs ever in Puerto Rico’s old Sixto Escobar stadium located adjacent to the beach. They say his home run not only cleared the stadium fences, but that the ball wound up a few feet from the water. This particular bobblehead was autographed by Sean Gibson, his grandson. This is definitely a Latino sports piece of history. Águila de Veracruz.
