NEW YORK, NY — The 28-year-old Mexican boxing superstar Jaime Munguía fell short on December 14, 2024, fighting against Bruno Surace from France in his hometown, Tijuana, Mexico. What fans thought was going to be an easy fight for Munguía actually dramatically turned into what made for one of the biggest upsets and knockouts of the year.
Munguía’s record coming into the fight was 44 wins, with 35 of them being by knockouts, and just one loss from Canelo Alvarez, while Surace’s record was polished to 24 wins, with four coming via knockout, and two won by a draw.
Although Munguía dropped Surace with a terrifying left hook in the second round, the damage didn’t succeed as the fight continued because in round six, Surace devastatingly knocked out Munguía with an overhand-right to the chin that left everyone shocked.
The native of Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, France, Surace, handed Munguía his first loss and saddened the fans as his undefeated record remained untouched — giving Munguía two losses in his last four fights of 2024. More importantly, most fans were way more shocked that Munguía lost to someone that’s not really known or well profiled in the boxing world but after that night, Surace will be remembered as someone who tested Munguía’s chin, and successfully left no crumbs.
Nonetheless, this is not the end for these two fighters as Munguía activated a rematch clause, which is currently being negotiated to be scheduled in either March or April of 2025, as ESPN first reported.
A loss like this is the toughest to recover from, especially when it’s in a fighter’s hometown and being the home favorite but Surace definitely made a name for himself. Someone that was once underestimated became a name not to be taken likely, and had thousands, perhaps millions, leaving the night with one thought: “expect the unexpected.”
A lot of changes has to be made from Munguía and his team before the rematch and one of them should be to protect his chin at all times, a well-known guide in boxing. The result of this fight can happen to anyone in the ring but it’s who can rise above adversity that matters in the end.
Will Surace do it again? How will Munguía come back from this loss? We indeed hope to see it this year.
