LOS ANGELES, CA — The 66-45 NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies come to LA for three games against the 65-47 NL West-leading Dodgers to complete the team’s home and away series this season. The Phillies swept the Dodgers in Philadelphia in July when they were blowing everyone away and had the best record in baseball by far. But they have since been in a slump, are 2-8 over their last ten games, and are no longer the holders of the best record in baseball. That now belongs to Cleveland.
The Dodgers have also gone through a slump of their own as they are 4-6 over their last ten games, with the Padres only 4.5 games back of them. Even still, this should be a good late-season matchup between two clubs that could meet up in the postseason, where both have a legitimate shot at making it to the World Series. The pitching matchup tonight between Aaron Nola, 11-4, 3,43 ERA, 130 strikeouts, and Tyler Glasnow, 8-6, 3.50 ERA, 155 strikeouts, has all the markings of a classic pitchers’ duel.
After two innings, Glasnow had five strikeouts, yet because of a misjudged fly to centerfielder Andy Pages, Havana, Cuba, off the bat of Nick Castellanos, that ended up a triple.
Then, two batters later, a lazy throw back to the infield by Teoscar Hernández, Cotui, Dominican Republic, on a routine single allowed the runners to advance to second and third, followed by a Glasnow wild pitch that allowed the second run of the inning to score. That was not a good beginning for the Dodgers. But have no fear, Dodger fans.
In the bottom of the third inning, Jason Heyward led off with a double, followed by an RBI double by Pages, who advanced to third on an infield hit by Nick Ahmed. Pages scored on a sacrifice fly by Shohei Ohtani to tie the game at 2-2. Then, on the first pitch, Teoscar Hernández parked a 390-foot home run into the left-field seats.

In the meantime, Glasnow was up to nine strikeouts after four innings. He would leave with six innings pitched, three runs, three runs earned, zero walks, and nine strikeouts. His total for the season now sits at 164 strikeouts, which is a career-high in a season for the big right-hander. Ohtani hit his thirty-fourth home run and stole his thirty-second base.

The Dodgers walk away with the first win of this series and send out Clayton Kershaw tomorrow as they look to work to widen the gap between Arizona, San Diego, and themselves.
