NEW YORK, NY — The New York Yankees are set to call up their third-ranked prospect Elmer Rodríguez, manager Aaron Boone confirmed on Jomboy Media’s “Talkin’ Yanks” Podcast Tuesday morning.
The 22-year-old right-hander from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, the No. 72 prospect in all of Major League Baseball, was acquired by the Yankees in a one-for-one trade during the 2024 offseason with catcher Carlos Narváez getting dealt to Boston.
Rodríguez boasts a 1.27 ERA in four starts with AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season, recording 20 strikeouts over 21 innings of work. His 2025 season spanned across three levels as he labored his way through the Yankees farm system from High-A Hudson Valley, to Somerset, and finally to Scranton where he began 2026. He was 11-8 with a 2.58 ERA and had 176 strikeouts in 2025, earning the Yankees Minor League Pitcher of the Year award from Baseball America for his performance.
The call-up on Tuesday comes following the organization’s decision to option Luis Gil to Triple-A after a tough outing on Sunday that left an opening in the rotation. Both Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole are making rehab starts for AA Somerset this week as well, so Rodríguez’s first stint in the show may be temporary while the Yankees refigure their rotation.
Boone spoke with Latino Sports back in Spring Training and commented about what he’s seen out of Rodríguez, stating, “Exciting what he’s done, you know, last year to put himself in a really good situation coming into camp.”
Additionally, Rodríguez represented his homeland of Puerto Rico at this year’s World Baseball Classic, starting in one game during Pool play which was in San Juan, Puerto Rico at Hiram Bithorn Stadium.
”With Puerto Rico, it’s not a big country. Just coming out of there, I want to be an example to those kids,” he said in a previous interview with Latino Sports. “If you put in the work and some dedication and discipline to it, you can always achieve your dreams. It’s an honor for me to come out of Puerto Rico.”
Rodríguez is expected to make his debut on Wednesday as the Yankees take on the Texas Rangers in Arlington with first pitch scheduled for 2:35PM ET.
