When the Yankees weren’t the Yankees
The truth is, the Yankees didn’t exist. The American League began in 1901 without a team in New York. The National League had a monopoly, with the Giants in Manhattan and the Dodgers in Brooklyn.
But the Yankees have won 27 World Series and 41 championships. Their last October champion celebration came in 2009, when they defeated the Phillies in six games. Yogi Berra was on 10 of those winning World Series rosters.
After the Orioles failed in two seasons, even finishing last in the American League in 1902, 34 games behind the winners, the Philadelphia Athletics, they sold the Baltimore franchise to New York.
FIRST OWNERS, THEY WERE GAMBLERS
The transaction, for $18,000, took place on January 9, 1903, almost 122 years ago. The buyers were Frank Farrell, who had made a fortune with his 200 bookmakers in New York, and William Devery, known as Chief, who had been the city’s Chief of Police, turning a blind eye to the illegal activities of gamblers and bookies.
That new New York team was named the Highlanders, because from 1903 onwards, they played at Hilltop Park, a stadium so named because it stood at the top of the small hill in Manhattan.
In 1913, a journalist, tired of struggling every day with his short space for the long title of the Highlanders in the tabloid, decided without consulting anyone to identify the club as the Yankees.
In the following days, it was imitated by the other team names. That’s how the most famous team name in baseball was born.
Stories of triumphs in the World Series
After that Cubs record of 108 years without winning a World Series, until 2016, Chicago 4-Indians 3, at the Society For American Baseball Research (SABR) we were excited to look for similar cases.
One particularly notable example is the Philadelphia Athletics, who have held a unique record for 62 years. The Philadelphia Athletics (not the Las Vegas Athletics) are the professional sports team that has won the most titles in that Pennsylvania city, with five.
And they haven’t played there since 1954—71 years! It’s worth noting that Philadelphia has teams in American football, soccer, ice hockey, basketball, volleyball, and even marbles and yo-yo. Furthermore, the Athletics won three more American League titles, but lost the World Series: in 1905 to the Giants in five games, in 1914 to the Boston Braves in four games, and in 1931 to the Cardinals, also in four games.

Cuando los Yankees no eran los Yankees
Lo cierto es que los Yankees no existían. La Liga Americana comenzó en 1901 sin equipo en Nueva York. El monopolio era de la Liga Nacional, abordo de los Gigantes en Manhattan y Dodgers en Brooklyn.
Pero los Yankees han ganado 27 Series Mundiales y 41 campeonatos. La última champaña de octubre la saborearon en 2009, cuando vencieron a los Phillies en seis juegos. Yogi Berra estuvo en 10 de los róster ganadores de esas Series.
Después que los Orioles fracasaron en dos temporadas, incluso en la de 1902 fueron últimos en la Americana, a 34 juegos de los ganadores, Atléticos de Philadelphia, vendieron la franquicia de Báltimore para Nueva York.
PRIMEROS DUEÑOS ERAN APOSTADORES
La operación, por 18 mil dólares, se realizó el nueve de enero de 1903, van a cumplirse 122 años. Los compradores fueron, Frank Farrell, quien había hecho una fortuna con sus 200 casas de apuestas en Nueva York, y William Dévery, conocido como Chief, quien había sido el Jefe de Policía de la ciudad, haciéndose el cieguito ante las actividades ilegales de apostadores y corredores de apuestas.
Aquel nuevo equipo de Nueva York fue bautizado como los Highlanders, porque a partir de 1903, jugaron en el Hilltop Park, estadio llamado así, porque se levantaba en lo más alto de la pequeña montañita de Manhattan.
En 1913, un periodista, cansado de luchar todos los días con su corto espacio para el largo título de los Highlanbders en tabloide, decidió sin consultar a nadie, idenntificar el club como Yankes.
En los días siguientes fue imitado po los demás tituladores. Así fue como nació el nombre de equipo más famoso en el beisbol.
Historias de triunfos en Series Mundiales
Después de aquel record de los Cachorros, de 108 años sin ganar una Serie Mundial, hasta 2016, Chicago 4-Indios 3, en la Society For Américan Baseball Research (SABR) nos entusiasmamos para búscar casos similares.
Uno muy notable ha sido el de los Atléticos de Philadelphia, quienes poseen una extraña marca hace 62 años. Los Atléticos de Philadelphia (no los de Las Vegas) son el equipo deportivo profesional que ha ganado más títulos en aquella ciudad de Pennsylvania, cinco.
Y no juegan allá desde 1954, ¡hace 71 años!. Es bueno advertir que en Philadelphia hay equipos de fútbol americano, fútbol soccer, hockey sobre hielo, basquetbol, voleybol y hasta de metras y yoyo. Además, los Atléticos ganaron tres títulos más de la Liga Americana, pero perdieron las Series Mundiales, en 1905 frente a los Gigantes en cinco juegos, en 1914 con los Bravos de Boston en cuatro fechas y en 1931 fueron vencidos por los Cardenales, igualmente en cuatro chances.
