PHILADELPHIA, PA — Let me tell you something you already know…
Not with words but rather his bat Tuesday night at Citizens Bank Park, Luis Arráez told The City of Brotherly Love something Philadelphia had already known way before his Phillies debut.
That being the 29-year-old Venezuelan is a pure hitting machine and winning caliber-type player.

“It’s just good to see what Luis brings, just the energy he plays with,” Philadelphia interim manager Don Mattingly said after Tuesday’s 5-0 win over the Nationals as Arráez went 2-4 with his first two at-bats resulting in a pair of RBI hits—first inning RBI single and third inning RBI double.
“I think anybody that plays with energy is infectious for your club so you love guys that play like that. And that’s just his personality it seems like. Anywhere I’ve seen him in the past, it looks the same. It’s always energy.”
Acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Giants ahead of Monday’s MLB trade deadline, Arráez was one of the first to stroll out of Philadelphia’s clubhouse Tuesday afternoon, getting work in with new teammates. And some he’s reunited with from his Marlins and Twins playing days.

Names like Jesús Luzardo, Bryan De La Cruz and Jhoan Durán are those the four-time All-Star and three-time batting champion had mentioned, adding that he’s happy not having to go up against left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, one of the best pitchers in the game, anymore.
“Now, I don’t have to face Cristopher Sánchez,” Arráez said of his new teammate who received his well-deserved 2025 National League LatinoMVP Starting Pitcher of the Year Award in Tuesday’s pregame.
“He’s so nasty and now we’re teammates so I’m very excited.”

Another who is thrilled with the acquisition of Arráez is Phillies superstar Bryce Harper, moving from first base back to right field to help the Phillies (61-53) potentially shake out better on the team’s defensive alignment.

“He plays like that every day so it’s exciting to have him on our side,” Harper said postgame of his first impression of Arráez as a Phillie, wasting no time to make a winning impact. “We’ve seen him from afar obviously being in Miami, San Diego and also San Fran. He’s that type of player. He’s done it in the AL and NL and I’m just excited to play alongside him.”
Lifting the excitement level at The Bank even more in Tuesday’s win was Luzardo (10-5, 3.36 ERA), with one of his most dominant outings of the 2026 season.
Four hits and two walks allowed across eight shutout innings, with seven strikeouts would do just that to the Philly crowd of 38,731, however the left-hander’s efficiency and ability to control the strike zone is what made his start stand out most–98 pitches total, 65 for strikes, and 18 first pitch strikes against 29 National batters.

“The longest and probably the most efficient (start of 2026), no runs on the board so I’ll take it,” Luzardo said of his outing. “I didn’t feel like I had my best stuff but we made it work.”
But the story Tuesday night was all about Arráez, receiving a standing ovation ahead of his first at-bat and immediately making a winning impact after.
“That’s why I’m here,” he said. “To enjoy the game and to try to do something special for the guys, and especially to the fans, too.”
