NEW YORK, NY — Just around this time a year ago, Seattle Mariners second baseman Jorge Polanco underwent surgery to repair the patellar tendon in his left knee.
Now, the 32-year-old switch-hitter of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, a 12-year MLB veteran, has the Mariners three wins away from clinching the American League pennant and appearing in the franchise’s first-ever World Series.
October Baseball for you.
Yes, in a lineup featuring Randy Arozarena, Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez, Josh Naylor, and Eugenio Suárez—it is Polanco leading the way for Seattle—currently up 1-0 in the best of seven American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
As he’s become the difference-maker at the plate in several key situations during the Mariners’ magical October run, all six of Polanco’s hits this postseason have appeared in crunch-time, or in other words, at points of the game when he left the yard or there were runners in scoring position/on base.
Jorge Polanco’s hits in the 2025 Postseason
- A solo HR off Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal in Game 2 of the ALDS, giving Seattle a 1-0 lead
- A second solo HR off of Skubal to add another run to Seattle’s lead in Game 2 of the ALDS
- A single to keep an eighth inning rally going in Game 2 of the ALDS
- A walk-off single in the 15th inning of Game 5 of the ALDS vs. Detroit, sending Seattle to their first ALCS since 2001
- A RBI single in the sixth inning of Game 1 of the ALCS vs. Toronto to break the tie and provide the Mariners with a 2-1 lead
- An eighth inning RBI single for an insurance run to make it 3-1 in Game 1 of the ALCS vs. Toronto, the eventual final score
“Just seeing what he’s been able to do from both sides has been just outstanding,” said Mariners manager Dan Wilson of Polanco Sunday night following Seattle’s 3-1 win in Game 1 of the ALCS at the Rogers Centre. “You look at the at-bats, the two homers against Skubal, the right-handed at-bat tonight again to drive in the go-ahead run. We saw the left-handed at-bat tonight to give us another little insurance run. The left-handed at-bats, especially at home in the 15th there (Game 5 of the ALDS).”
“All of his at-bats, he’s coming up in situations where he’s got a chance to do some damage, and not trying to do too much, and has put together just some huge, huge RBIs for us.”
