NEW YORK, NY — New York Mets superstar shortstop and two-time LatinoMVP Award recipient Francisco Lindor, who was expected to be Team Puerto Rico’s captain in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, released the following statement on his Instagram account (@lindor12bc) late Thursday night regarding the unfortunate news of him being unable to play in this year’s WBC due to insurance constraints.

“I feel deeply sorry for the fans of Puerto Rico. This hurts more than many would realize. As an athlete, there is no greater pride than representing your country, and not being able to do so leaves a void in my heart.

Still, I’ll always be Team Blonde, and I’ll be with it even if it’s from afar. This is the time to support those who will be there, because at the end it’s all about the name that goes on the front of the shirt. Puerto Rico will forever be in my heart.

I love you so much 🇵🇷🇵🇷”

Just when rumors were circulating that he might be able to play.
