Judge Goes Deep And Warren Dominates As Yankees Face Key Rotation Decisions

TAMPA, FL — As the New York Yankees continue to finalize their roster ahead of Opening Day, one of the biggest storylines emerging from camp is not who made the rotation—but who didn’t.

Luis Gil, the 2024 American League LatinoMVP Rookie of the Year Award winner and one of the organization’s most electric young arms, was notably absent from the Yankees’ newly revealed four-man starting rotation following Sunday’s 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Manager Aaron Boone confirmed the club will open the season with Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, and Ryan Weathers in that order, leaving Gil’s role uncertain as roster decisions loom.

Gil, 27, from Azua, Dominican Republic, is expected to remain in Tampa to throw a live batting practice session midweek, with the possibility of being optioned to Triple-A or utilized in a hybrid piggyback role later in the season. Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake noted the team remains open to creative ways of deploying the right-hander, but acknowledged the current roster crunch.

While Gil’s situation headlines the Yankees’ pitching decisions, the presence and health of ace Gerrit Cole continues to loom just as large. Cole is scheduled to make his second start of the spring this week against the Chicago Cubs, where he is expected to throw two innings as he builds towards the season.

The Yankees’ rotation outlook hinges heavily on Cole’s durability. The 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner anchored the staff with a 15-4 record, 2.63 ERA, and 222 strikeouts across 209 innings, providing both production and stability atop the rotation—something the Yankees rotation missed in 2025 with Cole recovering from Tommy John surgery. With a younger and evolving group behind him in 2026, Cole’s role as a dependable frontline starter and mentor is more critical than ever.

On the offensive side, Aaron Judge continued to round into form following his return from the World Baseball Classic. The Yankees captain launched his third home run of the spring—and first since returning from WBC play—with a fifth-inning blast off Phillies starter Aaron Nola to extend New York’s lead to 3-0.

Judge’s power display was part of a well-rounded offensive performance. Ryan McMahon opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a run-scoring hit to help extend the Yankees’ advantage.

However, the biggest takeaway on the field may have been the continued emergence of Will Warren. The right-hander delivered a dominant outing, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out six without issuing a walk. Warren’s performance further solidified his place in the Yankees’ Opening Day rotation and underscored his rapid development this spring, where he now holds a 1.42 ERA across 25 1/3 innings.

The Phillies mounted a late push behind Kyle Schwarber’s two-run homer in the eighth inning, but the Yankees responded with insurance runs to seal the victory in their final game in Florida.

As the Yankees now head west for their next phase of spring training, roster decisions remain front and center. Between Gil’s uncertain role, Cole’s progression, and the emergence of arms like Warren, the Yankees’ pitching picture is still taking shape—one that could ultimately define their early-season trajectory.
