Coral Gables, Florida (VIP-WIRE) – Question of the Week. The first Japanese player to play in the Major Leagues was left-handed pitcher Masanori Murakami with the San Francisco Giants in 1964 and 1965, when he was 20 years old. How many Japanese players have played at this highest level?
The Answer: There have been 74 natives of Japan who have played in the Majors, including Ichiro Suzuki, inducted into the Cooperstown Hall of Fame; Hideo Nomo, who, with his agent Don Nomura, managed to eliminate the ban imposed on Japanese players in 1995; and Shohei Ohtani, the best in the Major Leagues since Babe Ruth, now with the Dodgers.
And this year, no fewer than five Japanese players will wear Major League uniforms, including third base slugger Munetaka Murakami with the White Sox.
** The Dodgers are about to sign an outfielder, who is not Japanese. It will possibly be Kyle Tucker, a Tampa native, who will celebrate his 28th birthday the day after tomorrow. He specializes in right field, having played for the Astros (2018-2024) and the Cubs (2025).
** The Yankees are about to unveil a roster with many new faces, which is the right thing to do. General Manager Brian Cashman is working overtime.
