My highly respected general:
I am writing to you as the manager of Almendares, winner of the first Caribbean Series in 1949. As you know, I have been in this Hereafter, which you call the Afterlife, since October 9, 1992, two days shy of my 80th birthday.
The Caribbean Series’ Catastrophic Destruction
I am writing to you about the Caribbean Series, your beloved prized possession. You must have suffered greatly with the disaster that has devastated it for years. And it was the pinnacle of baseball, after the Major Leagues!
The first 12, between 1949 and 1960, were unforgettable. Excellent baseball was played, and the organization was top-notch.
But the people involved in that business, led by the petty Caribbean commissioner Juan Puello, have mistreated the Series so cruelly that after 1989, no country wanted to host it. Then a man named Carlos Isava appeared and became a businessman. He organized the 1990 and 1991 Series in Miami.
The 1990 Series was at Orange Ballpark, and the other at Bobby Maduro Stadium. Well, they were two such resounding failures that the man lost a million dollars.
And this year, once again, there was no host for the Caribbean Series. Nobody wanted to organize it after it couldn’t be played in Caracas for political reasons.
Look, General: professional baseball has existed for 157 years, because the first team with all its players on the payroll was the Red Stockings in 1869. And there has never been an event with a history as badly mistreated as that of the Caribbean Series.
Last year’s event was ridiculous; they presented the Japan Breeze team. What does Japan have to do with the Caribbean? This year, from February 1st to 7th, the venue will be Guadalajara, a long way from the Caribbean! And Mexico will have two teams, the Green and the Red. The others are Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Panama.
And the mess is even bigger because there will be another Caribbean Series in Caracas, with seven or nine teams… It gets tiring, doesn’t it, General?
I insist that I feel for you, who loves these Series so much, for which you have dedicated your life to writing their history.

Mi muy respetado general:
Le escribo, como mánager del Almendares, ganador de la primera Serie del Caribe, la de 1949. Como sabe, estoy en este Más Acá, que ustedes llaman Más Allá, desde el nueve de octubre de 1992, cuando me faltaban dos días para cumplir mis 80.
Relajo catastrófico la Serie del Caribe
Le escribo acerca de la Serie del Caribe, su niña consentida. Debe haber sufrido mucho con el desastre que hace años la ha destrozado. ¡Y era lo máximo del beisbol, después de las Grandes Ligas!
Las primeras 12, entre 1949 y 1960, fueron inolvidables. Se jugó muy buen beisbol y la organización era de primera categoría.
Pero la gente alrededor de ese negocio, encabezado por el dictadorzuelo comisionado del Caribe, Juan Puello, han maltratado las Series con tal crueldad, que después de 1989, ningún país quería ser la sede; y apareció un señor, llamado Carlos Isava, que se hizo empresario. Organizó las Series de 1990 y 1991 en Miami.
La del 90 en el Orange Ball, la otra en el Bobby Maduro. Pues, fueron dos fracasos tan contundentes, que el hombre perdió un millón de dólares.
Y este año, otra vez, no había sede para la Serie del Caribe. Nadie la quería organizar, después que no se pudo jugar en Caracas, por razones políticas.
Mire, mi general: el beisbol profesional ha vivido 157 años, porque el primer equipo con todos los jugadores a sueldo, fue el de los Red Stockings, de 1869. Y nunca hubo un evento con historia tan maltratada como la de la Serie del Caribe.
Lo del año pasado fue ridículo, presentaron al equipo Japan Breze. ¿Qué tiene que ver Japón con el Caribe? Este año, del primero al siete de febrero, la sede será en Guadalajara, ¡bien lejos del Caribe!, y México tendrá dos equipo, el Verde y el Rojo. Los otros, Puerto Rico, Dominicana y Panamá.
Y el relajo es más gigantesco, porque habrá otra Serie del Caribe en Caracas, con siete o nueve equipos… Se cansa uno, ¿o no mi general?
Insisto en que lo siento por Ud. que tanto quiere estas Series, por lo que ha dedicado la vida escribir su historia.
