SPRINGFIELD, MA – Today marks a historic milestone for Puerto Ricans everywhere as basketball star Carmelo Anthony is officially inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. This momentous occasion not only celebrates Anthony’s remarkable career but also serves as a proud moment for the Puerto Rican community.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Baltimore, Anthony rose to become one of the most gifted scorers in NBA history, while never losing sight of his Puerto Rican heritage. His late father, Carmelo Iriarte, was a member of the Young Lords, a political Puerto Rican organization (that I also as a teen was a part of  in New York City). Though Anthony was only two years old when his father passed away, that connection has continued to shape his identity and inspire his embrace of his roots.

Anthony’s induction marks the first time a Puerto Rican NBA player has been enshrined as a player in the Hall of Fame, filling Puerto Ricans both on the island and across the diaspora with immense pride. Beyond his on-the-court excellence, Anthony has also given back in meaningful ways—such as helping build a basketball courts in Puerto Rico one of them in San Juan’s controversial poor barrio, La Perla neighborhood—cementing his bond with the Puerto Rican people.

While Puerto Rico has a rich basketball tradition, with legends like Butch Lee also honored in the Hall of Fame, Anthony’s enshrinement as a player represents a historic first. His induction is a recognition not only of his elite talent, but also of his enduring connection to heritage and community.

As Carmelo Anthony takes his rightful place among basketball’s immortals, we also celebrate the broader history and contributions of Puerto Ricans in sports. Today, Puerto Ricans everywhere stand tall with pride.
