Trevor Rogers Baffles Dodgers In 3-2 O’s Win

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Orioles were able to pull out a 3-2 win against the Dodgers in LA Saturday night despite the cowardice of the analytical geniuses who believe a pitcher can only throw 90 to 100 pitches before his arm explodes!

Baltimore got a magnificent effort from Trevor Rogers, who looked better than his 3-7 record and 5.86 ERA prior to his outing would suggest. That was all until Tommy Edman blooped a soft single to center with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning though he was almost perfect, facing the minimum number of Dodger batters. Only a walk to Andy Pages, Havana, Cuba, who was caught stealing in the first inning, kept him from being perfect through 4.2 innings.

The big and elite six-foot five lefty left the game with a line of seven innings of brilliant pitching—one hit, no runs, two walks, and six strikeouts. He threw 96 pitches, of which 60 were strikes.

So now came four Orioles relievers to hold a 3-0 lead for two innings which was something Rogers should have been given the opportunity to finish. A reliever who looked like Steve Carlton as he frustrated this powerful Dodger lineup.

“To do that against probably the best lineup in baseball, some of the best players to ever play this game, it was just awesome,” Rogers said. “At the end of the day, we got the win, and I’m just happy I was able to contribute.”

When Shohei Ohtani led off the bottom of the ninth inning with his sixteenth home run of the year, you could feel the excitement in the crowd of 50,538 in attendance.

Freddie Freeman walked, Mookie Betts beat out an infield hit, and with two outs, Tommy Edman lined a shot to right fielder Leody Taveras, Tenares, Dominican Republic, who dropped what should have been the third out. It allowed Freeman to score, making it a one-run game.

But Kyle Tucker took the air out of the Dodger Balloon as he struck out to end the game while Baltimore almost blew  it.

Lost in all of that was a fine outing by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who came into the game with a record of 7-4 and a 2.52 ERA and pitched well enough to be in a position to win this game. But a few timely hits by the Orioles that put three runs on the board changed complexion. Yamamoto would leave with a line of six innings pitched, six hits, three runs, two walks, and six strikeouts—throwing 102 pitches, of which 69 were strikes.

The series is now even at one apiece, with the Dodgers scheduled to start on Sunday—Emmet Sheehan, 3-4, 4.76 ERA, while the Orioles will send out Brandon Young, 5-2, 318 ERA, as both teams inch closer to the midway point of the season.
