FLUSHING, NY — The Mets completed one of the most dramatic comeback victories in a roller coaster season Sunday afternoon, rallying from a three-run ninth-inning deficit to defeat the Yankees 7-6 in 10 innings at Citi Field and capture the first installment of the 2026 Subway Series.
Trailing 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Mets appeared on the verge of another frustrating late-game loss. Instead, they delivered a signature moment early in what could be pointed to as their season turnaround.

After singles from Carson Benge and Bo Bichette to open the inning against Yankees closer David Bednar, three-time LatinoMVP Juan Soto hustled down the line reaching to keep the inning alive and bring the tying run to the plate.
That set the stage for Tyrone Taylor, who crushed a game-tying three-run homer into the left-field seats, sending the Citi Field crowd of 40,232 into a frenzy.

“It was pretty awesome, the atmosphere here was electric,” Taylor said afterward. “Bednar’s a really good pitcher, so it felt good, for sure.”
The Mets completed the comeback in the 10th inning when Benge hit a walk-off fielder’s choice into a crowded infield. Yankees infielders Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann collided attempting to field the ball as the winning run crossed the plate.
According to team notes, the Mets had lost their previous 91 games when trailing after eight innings, making Sunday’s victory their first such comeback win since September 30th 2024.

“Baseball is hard to explain at times, but now we continue to come back in games,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “We get down early, we showed the whole homestand. We get down, get punched in the face, we get back up, and today was a perfect example…
The most important part is we are winning games and winning series. This was a good homestand.”
The Yankees appeared in control for most of the afternoon behind Puerto Rican rookie right-hander Elmer Rodríguez, who turned in his best outing yet in pinstripes. The 22-year-old allowed one run across 4.1 innings while showing improved command and poise in a hostile road environment.

“Felt like I was attacking more, getting more in the zone, and had better results, so it felt good,” said Rodriguez, adding that he enjoyed his first Subway Series experience: “It was awesome, like always seeing the series and everyone has talked to about it on how intense it gets so it it was good to go out there and compete.”
The Yankees grabbed an early lead on Ben Rice’s 15th home run of the season before erupting for four runs in the sixth inning. Volpe delivered the biggest blow with a two-run single, while defensive mistakes by the Mets, including a dropped popup by Bichette, helped extend the inning.

Volpe finished with three RBI and reached base four times, continuing a productive Subway Series in which he drew seven walks overall. Freddy Peralta (2024 NL LatinoMVP Pitcher of the Year) also made an impact, tossing five innings of three run ball with four strikeouts. His most difficult challenge on the day was command as the Dominican right-hander surrended six walks.
The Mets chipped away when Luis Torrens lined a two-run double off Jake Bird in the sixth inning before Taylor’s late heroics completed the rally.

After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged the Yankees’ struggles during a difficult road trip but defended his bullpen despite Bednar’s blown save.
“I think they’re all capable of getting big outs and they have throughout this year” Boone said as the Yankees will face the Blue Jays next in a four-game set at Yankee Stadium starting Monday night.
“We just had a terrible road trip. We certainly had some tough ones, that’s part of it. We gotta get after it tomorrow.”
